Writing and Introduction

 

    Introductions are a skill that I have been working on in my writing. I struggled with it, due to the fact that I can’t always introduce a topic. I decided to take a different approach this time with my introduction, I use more evidence/background information. This is so the reader can understand the whole situation as thoroughly as possible. Along with that I try to introduce my topic while giving the information to help the reader. 

“College athletics, one of the most popular and exciting activities in all of sports. This goes for baseball, basketball, hockey and college football. College athletics produce just under 16 billion dollars a year in revenue. Football alone makes 925 million dollars in revenue a year. With this being said, the NCAA was made to make sure that the athletes are safe both physically and mentally. The NCAA is a non profit organization and the profits go back into the schools and teams of these schools. With all this money many players and fans believe that these players should be given some type of compensation in the form of money. This formed the NIL, bringing up the big question, Why is the NIL and the payment of collegiate athletes so harmful to collegiate sports and programs?”

I tried to give good background information while introducing the topic I will be discussing as well. This approach helped me type my introduction more efficiently, and helped me lead into my other points.

Topic Selection

    Topic selection is always something that has been an issue to me. I try and try to think of something that will peak my interest, and something I can write about. This doesn’t just go for writing pieces, this goes for film making and even speeches. Now you may ask, “how do you come up with topics then?”. Now that is a legitimate question, what is the most efficient way to come up with a topic?

    For me personally, topic selection is a three step process. Step one, read the prompt, and know what type of essay/speech I am writing. Is it argumentative? Is it informative? Is it persuasive? These are all major aspects of what topic I would decide to pick. Step two, talk to friends or peers. This is huge because they normally know how you think, so they can help bring in a different perspective on topics you may like. This is where a majority of my general ideas for topics come from. The third and final step is looking on the internet. When it comes to narrowing down on a topic, the internet always helps. There are tons of articles and lists on specific topics related to general ideas. With this being said, this is the process I use to pick a topic.

    Topic selection depends on the person. Everyone has their own way of doing things and their own methods. I use this process because it works for me. This may not work for others, some may want to just use the internet right away. Others like to come up with their own ideas in their head or ask others for their opinion. Personally, I like to use a combination of all three to help make my process as smooth as possible. It's all preference and it helps with my struggles when it comes to selecting a topic.
